Moving to Austin? Start here, not on Zillow.
Everyone does it. You get the job offer, or your company announces the relocation, or you just decide Austin is the move and within 24 hours you're deep in Zillow, saving homes in neighborhoods you've never heard of, in a city you've never lived in.
I get it. It feels productive. It's not.
Here's the thing about Austin: it's not one city. It's a collection of genuinely different communities, cultures, price points, and vibes, all wearing the same Austin label. The neighborhood that's perfect for a 28-year-old who works downtown and wants to walk to brunch is not the same neighborhood that's right for a family of four who needs good schools and a yard.
Before you look at a single listing, get clear on your actual life first.
Where will you work, and does commute matter to you? Austin traffic is real. If you're driving to a specific office five days a week, that shapes everything. If you're fully remote, you have a lot more flexibility.
What does your daily life look like? Do you want walkability, or are you fine driving everywhere? Do you want quiet and space, or energy and density? Do you care about being close to restaurants and music, or would you rather have a big backyard and a slower pace?
What are your non-negotiables? Schools, if you have kids. A specific price range that actually lets you breathe financially. Maybe proximity to a particular part of town where your friends or family are landing.
Once I understand your real life, not just your wish list, I can point you toward places that actually fit. That's a very different conversation than pulling up a map and guessing.
The biggest mistake I see relocators make: falling in love with a house before they've fallen in love with the neighborhood. A beautiful home in the wrong area for your life is still the wrong home.
Let's do this in the right order.
